For centuries, humankind has searched for its place in the universe, seeking guidance from spiritual and mystical sources. Music has often played an important role in this journey, from a perfunctory means of declamation to a magnificent illumination of sacred text. Through works by Palestrina, Britten, Salamone Rossi, the contemporary American composer Frank Ferko and others, we offer a glimpse at the ways composers have taken the ideas of sacred love, devotion and mystery and used music to enhance the individual journey.

The wedding of music and dramatic themes is certainly not limited to the operatic stage. Sacred texts embody some of the most highly charged emotional content set to music. In this program, we focus on the dramatic sacred music of composers who bridged the gap between polyphony and monody as storytelling devices. Works by Bouzignac, Charpentier, Mazzocchi and Carissimi exhibit not only the manner in which these Baroque composers acknowledged the rising dominion of melody, but also the manner in which melody complements the tradition of polyphony to move the listener.
This concert is presented in association with the Glebe Music Festival.
