Concert 2 | ECHOES

Sunday 31 August 2025, 3.00pm
Mosman Art Gallery, Mosman, Sydney NSW

Echoes is a celebration of music that has lived many lives, transforming across time, culture and genre. It brings together melodies rooted in folk traditions, instrumental compositions, and works inspired by diverse musical forms, each reimagined for choir with fresh insight and vitality.

Among the highlights in this concert is Tuttarana by the brilliant composer Reena Esmail, a dynamic work that emulates Indian percussion through the use of konnakol: the rhythmic vocal syllables of South Indian classical music, which infuses the piece with percussive energy.

The program also features folk tunes that have been passed down through centuries, now given vivid new life in arrangements such as Percy Grainger’s robust setting of Agincourt Song and Ben Parry’s sweet reworking of Viel Freuden Mit Sich Bringet.

The lighter side of the theme is explored as well, with playful and engaging arrangements in Jack Halloran’s audacious setting of Camptown Races and Saunder Choi’s jubilant Leron, Leron Sinta. In contrast, Grainger’s At Twilight offers a reflective moment in the journey, evoking the image of sailors whose stories live on in the voices of those who remember them.

Together, these works form a dynamic tapestry of sound that captures the essence of memory, reinvention, and the enduring power of song.
